Just three hours before Islamic State entered Syria’s ancient city of Palmyra in May 2015, three big trucks fled in the opposite direction. They were carrying priceless artefacts: hundreds of statues, glasses, ceramics – relics of one of history’s greatest cities, saved from the thievery and weapons of ideologues.
