In near-freezing temperatures they sat in solemn remembrance as the night faded into dawn, hearing unvarnished, shocking stories from the diaries and letters of Anzac soldiers. One hundred years since Australians began arriving on the Western Front, thousands gathered at the Australian National Memorial near Villers-Bretonneux.
